Golden Opportunity Scholar Mentor

Mentors for Golden Opportunity Scholars must be attending the ASA-CSSA-SSSA Annual Meeting.

The Scholar Program includes an orientation session on Monday afternoon for Scholars and Mentors. In addition, they are invited to a reception on Sunday and a luncheon on Wednesday. Mentors are encouraged to tell the students what they do at the Annual Meetings and invite their scholars to attend a few sessions they may find relevant together.

After the Annual Meeting, we ask the mentors to stay in contact for at least one year. Email, phone calls, and video calls are all acceptable, and the relationship depends on the preferences of you and your scholar. The goal of the program is to create a lasting professional relationship that will remain for many years to come.

Mentors should:

  • Commit to making time for their scholar during the next 12 months.
  • Have access to their own network of professionals to connect with their scholar.
  • Enjoy teaching and working with undergraduate students.
  • Feel comfortable talking about their field and their personal career path story.
