Emily Delorean is a senior at Colorado State University. She is studying Soil and Crop Sciences with a concentration in Plant Biotechnology, Genetics and Breeding. Emily has been involved in nitrogen volatilization research at the USDA with Dr. Ardell Halvorson and Dr. Ron Follett. She has also been a Bean CAP intern for Dr. Mark Brick, the dry bean breeder at Colorado State University, where she investigated the color retention ability of black beans. Emily is currently an intern for Dr. Jan Leach. Under Dr. Leach’s guidance she will be exploring a novel source of genetic resistance in rice (Oryza sativa) to Xanthomonas oryzae, the casual agent of bacterial leaf blight. After graduating in December 2013 she plans to pursue a PhD in Plant Genetics. Emily is interested in the mechanisms in which crops can improve human health, specifically by nutrition, innate human disease prevention properties and biopharmaceuticals.
